möchte: would like

Möchte is the polite way to say what you want: in a shop, a café, or with people you don't know well. It works like a modal verb (Modal verbs: können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen).

Use it with a noun (in the accusative) or with an infinitive at the end.

  • Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte.I'd like a coffee, please.
  • Möchtest du ein Stück Kuchen?Would you like a piece of cake?
  • Wir möchten im Sommer nach Salzburg fahren. We'd like to go to Salzburg in the summer.
  • Ich hätte gern ein Brötchen.I'd like a bread roll.

Ich hätte gern … is just as polite as ich möchte … and very common when ordering.

gern: liking to do something

To say you like doing something, use the verb plus gern (also gerne). Gern comes after the verb; nicht gern means you don't like it.

  • Ich spiele gern Fußball.I like playing football.
  • Jonas fährt nicht gern Auto.Jonas doesn't like driving.
