Three ways to give an instruction
German has a command form for each kind of you (du, ihr or Sie: which you?).
| du | ihr | Sie | |
|---|---|---|---|
| kommen | Komm! | Kommt! | Kommen Sie! |
| machen | Mach! | Macht! | Machen Sie! |
| warten | Warte! | Wartet! | Warten Sie! |
| nehmen | Nimm! | Nehmt! | Nehmen Sie! |
| fahren | Fahr! | Fahrt! | Fahren Sie! |
| sein | Sei! | Seid! | Seien Sie! |
- du: take the du form, drop -st and the pronoun: du kommst → Komm! Verbs with e → i or e → ie keep the change: Nimm! Lies! Iss! Sprich! Verbs with a → ä do not: Fahr! Schlaf! Stems ending in -t or -d add -e: Warte! Arbeite!
- ihr: the normal ihr form without ihr: Kommt! Lest!
- Sie: the infinitive, then Sie: Kommen Sie!
Separable prefixes go to the end: Ruf mich an! (Separable verbs: anrufen, aufstehen)
- Komm bitte her! Please come here!
- Nimm noch ein Stück Kuchen!Have another piece of cake!
- Lies den Text!Read the text!
- Kinder, macht bitte die Tür zu!Kids, please close the door!
- Warten Sie bitte hier! Please wait here!
- Sei leise!Be quiet!
- Ruf mich morgen an!Call me tomorrow!
- Seien Sie bitte pünktlich! Please be on time!
Bitte makes any command a polite request. Put it after the verb or at the end: Warten Sie bitte! Small words like mal and doch soften it further.
Common mistakes
Du komm!→ Komm! The du imperative has no pronoun.Fähr langsam!→ Fahr langsam! a → ä verbs lose their umlaut in the imperative.Nehm das!→ Nimm das! e → i verbs keep the change.Kommen!→ Kommen Sie! The Sie command needs Sie after the verb.Sind ruhig!→ Seid ruhig! or Seien Sie ruhig! Sein has its own forms.
