You know the passive in the present and Präteritum (The passive: wird gebaut, wurde gebaut). Two more patterns are very common: the passive with a modal verb (must be done, can be done) and the passive in the Perfekt (has been done).

Modal verb + Partizip II + werden

The modal verb is conjugated in position 2. At the end come the Partizip II and then the infinitive werden.

  • Die Heizung muss dringend repariert werden. The heating urgently needs to be repaired.
  • Hier darf nicht geparkt werden.Parking is not allowed here.
  • Das Formular kann auch online ausgefüllt werden. The form can also be filled in online.
  • Das Konzert musste wegen des Regens abgesagt werden. The concert had to be cancelled because of the rain.

For the past, just put the modal verb into the Präteritum: muss → musste, kann → konnte, darf → durfte.

The Perfekt: sein + Partizip II + worden

The passive Perfekt always takes sein, and the participle of werden loses its ge-: worden.

  • Mein Fahrrad ist gestohlen worden. My bike has been stolen.
  • Die Straße ist letztes Jahr erneuert worden. The road was resurfaced last year.
  • Ich bin noch nie so freundlich behandelt worden.I've never been treated so kindly.
  • Weißt du, ob das Paket schon abgeholt worden ist?Do you know if the parcel has already been collected?

The Plusquamperfekt works the same way with war: Die Wohnung war vorher renoviert worden.

All the tenses at a glance

TenseExample

In a subordinate clause

The conjugated verb goes to the very end, after everything else: …, weil die Heizung repariert werden muss. / …, dass das Paket abgeholt worden ist.

geworden or worden? Er ist Lehrer geworden = he has become a teacher. Er ist gefragt worden = he has been asked. After a Partizip II it is always worden.

In everyday speech, the Präteritum passive (wurde gebaut) is often used where English has "has been built", so both Die Brücke wurde gebaut and Die Brücke ist gebaut worden are fine.

Common mistakes

  • Das Haus ist gebaut geworden. In the passive it is worden: Das Haus ist gebaut worden.
  • Das Haus hat gebaut worden. The passive Perfekt always takes sein.
  • Das Auto muss repariert wird. After a modal verb, werden stays in the infinitive: muss repariert werden.
  • Das Auto muss werden repariert. The participle comes before werden: muss repariert werden.
  • …, weil das Auto muss repariert werden. In a subordinate clause the modal verb goes last: …, weil das Auto repariert werden muss.
