Modal verbs in the past: konnte, musste, wollte

The simple past of modal verbs, used in speech and in writing

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

For most verbs, spoken German uses the Perfekt to talk about the past. But just like war and hatte (war and hatte: the past of sein and haben), the modal verbs (Modal verbs: können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen) are almost always used in the Präteritum, even in conversation.

The form is simple: take the infinitive stem, drop the umlaut, and add -te: können → konnte, müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte. mögen also changes g to ch: mochte.

  • ich and er/sie/es are the same, with no extra ending.
  • The second verb stays as an infinitive at the end: Ich musste gestern lange arbeiten.
  • möchte has no past of its own. Use wollte: Ich möchte ein Eis → Ich wollte ein Eis.
  • Gestern konnte ich nicht kommen.I couldn't come yesterday.
  • Wir mussten eine Stunde auf den Bus warten. We had to wait an hour for the bus.
  • Als Kind wollte ich Pilot werden. As a child I wanted to be a pilot.
  • Früher durfte man im Restaurant rauchen. You used to be allowed to smoke in restaurants.
  • Musstest du am Wochenende arbeiten?Did you have to work at the weekend?
  • Ich sollte dich von Anna grüßen.Anna asked me to say hello to you.

  • Konntet ihr den Weg finden? Were you able to find the way?

Watch the umlaut

könnte, müsste, dürfte with an umlaut are different forms: they mean could, would have to, might (Polite requests: Könnten Sie…?, Ich hätte gern…, Würden Sie…?). Ich konnte nicht kommen = I wasn't able to come. Ich könnte morgen kommen = I could come tomorrow. Sollte has no umlaut, so it can mean both was supposed to and should; the context decides.

No umlaut in the past: können → konnte, müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte.

Common mistakes

  • Ich könnte gestern nicht kommen. → Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen.
  • Er konnten nicht schlafen. → Er konnte nicht schlafen.
  • Ich möchtete einen Tee. → Ich wollte einen Tee.
  • Ich musste gehen nach Hause. → Ich musste nach Hause gehen. The infinitive goes to the end.
