When sein, not haben

Most verbs form the Perfekt with haben (Talking about the past: the Perfekt with haben). A smaller group uses sein:

  • verbs of movement from one place to another: gehen, fahren, kommen, fliegen, laufen, reisen;
  • verbs of change of state: aufstehen (get up), einschlafen (fall asleep), aufwachen (wake up), werden (become);
  • and three special ones: sein, bleiben (stay) and passieren (happen).

Ask yourself: does the subject move from A to B or change its state? Then use sein. Sleeping, working or staying in one place is not a change, so schlafen and arbeiten take haben.

In southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, sitzen, stehen and liegen also take sein: Ich bin gesessen. In northern and central Germany you say Ich habe gesessen. Both are correct.

Common mistakes

  • Ich habe nach Berlin gefahren. → Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren.
  • Ich habe in Wien gewesen. → Ich bin in Wien gewesen.
  • Er ist aufgestehen. → Er ist aufgestanden.
  • Wir sind gefahrt. → Wir sind gefahren. fahren is irregular.
  • Ich bin lange geschlafen. → Ich habe lange geschlafen. Sleeping is not a movement or a change.
