Was and had

For most verbs, spoken German uses the Perfekt (Talking about the past: the Perfekt with haben). But sein and haben are different: in conversation, people usually use their short simple past, the Präteritum: war (was) and hatte (had).

ich and er, sie, es have the same form, with no ending: ich war, er war; ich hatte, sie hatte.

  • Gestern war ich müde.I was tired yesterday.
  • Wo warst du am Wochenende?Where were you at the weekend?
  • Wir waren im Urlaub in Österreich. We were on holiday in Austria.
  • Das Wetter war leider schlecht.Unfortunately the weather was bad.
  • Ich hatte keine Zeit.I didn't have time.
  • Hattest du einen schönen Tag?Did you have a nice day?
  • Meine Großeltern hatten einen großen Garten. My grandparents had a big garden.

The Perfekt (ich bin gewesen, ich habe gehabt) is also correct, and you will hear it more in southern Germany and Austria. But war and hatte are shorter and used everywhere.

  • Wart ihr schon in der neuen Bäckerei?Have you been to the new bakery yet?

Fixed phrases with haben stay with haben in the past: Ich habe Hunger → Ich hatte Hunger; Ich habe Glück → Ich hatte Glück.

Common mistakes

  • er wart → er war. wart is only for ihr.
  • ich hattet → ich hatte.
  • Ich war Hunger. → Ich hatte Hunger. Hunger and Durst go with haben.
  • Ich warte müde. → Ich war müde. warten means to wait.
  • ihr ward → ihr wart.
