German grammar lessons › Level A2 › Konjunktiv II: würde, hätte, wäre

Polite requests: Könnten Sie…?, Ich hätte gern…, Würden Sie…?

Use könnte, hätte, wäre, würde and dürfte to ask for things politely.

A direct question like Können Sie mir helfen? is fine, but German sounds more polite with the Konjunktiv II, the form behind English could, would, might. At A2 you need just a handful of forms, mainly to ask, order and suggest.

The forms

Most of them are the past tense with an umlaut added (konnte → könnte, hatte → hätte, war → wäre). The endings are the same as in the past tense.

könnenhabenseinwerdendürfensollen

dukönntesthättestwärstwürdestdürftestsolltest
er, sie, eskönntehättewärewürdedürftesollte
wirkönntenhättenwärenwürdendürftensollten
ihrkönntethättetwärtwürdetdürftetsolltet
sie, Siekönntenhättenwärenwürdendürftensollten

Sollen has no umlaut: sollte means should.

Asking someone to do something

  • Könnten Sie / Könntest du …? = Could you …?
  • Würden Sie / Würdest du …? = Would you …?

The infinitive goes at the end, as with a modal verb.

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?Could you help me, please?
  • Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen?Would you close the window, please?
  • Könntest du mir das Salz geben?Could you pass me the salt?

Asking for things and permission

  • Ich hätte gern … = I'd like … (very common when ordering, see In a café or restaurant).
  • Ich würde gern … + infinitive = I'd like to …
  • Hätten Sie …? = Would you have …?
  • Wäre es möglich, … zu …? = Would it be possible to …?
  • Dürfte ich …? = Might I …? (very polite)
  • Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee mit Milch.I'd like a coffee with milk.
  • Ich würde gern am Fenster sitzen.I'd like to sit by the window.
  • Hätten Sie vielleicht einen Moment Zeit?Would you have a moment?
  • Wäre es möglich, den Termin zu verschieben?Would it be possible to move the appointment?
  • Dürfte ich kurz Ihr Telefon benutzen?Might I use your phone for a moment?

Advice: sollte

  • Du solltest mehr schlafen. You should sleep more.

bitte, vielleicht and mal (Friendly little words: mal, doch, ja) make a request even softer: Könnten Sie vielleicht mal nachsehen?

Common mistakes

  • Ich würde einen Kaffee haben. With haben and sein use hätte and wäre: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
  • Mixing up konnte (could, in the past: Ich konnte nicht kommen) and könnte (could, polite or possible). The umlaut makes the difference.
  • Könnten Sie helfen mir? The infinitive goes last: Könnten Sie mir helfen?
  • Ich will einen Kaffee is grammatical but sounds blunt. Say Ich hätte gern or Ich möchte.
