Konjunktiv II for hedging, irony and politeness
How hätte, wäre, würde and dürfte soften requests, hedge claims, mark something as done, or carry irony.

You know Konjunktiv II for unreal conditions and wishes, and als ob (als ob and als: acting as if). At C2 the interesting uses are the ones where nothing is unreal: the Konjunktiv simply makes a statement softer, more polite, more tentative, or ironic.
Politeness
Requests become more polite the further they move from the indicative:
| Request | Tone |
|---|---|
| Können Sie mir helfen? | neutral |
| Könnten Sie mir helfen? | polite |
| Würden Sie mir bitte helfen? | polite |
| Wären Sie so freundlich, mir zu helfen? | very polite, formal |
| Hätten Sie vielleicht einen Moment Zeit? | polite and tentative |
- Hätten Sie vielleicht einen Moment Zeit für mich?Would you perhaps have a moment for me?
- Ich hätte da noch eine Frage zum Vertrag.I'd have one more question about the contract.
Ich hätte gern … is the normal way to order. Das wäre alles or Das wär's ends an order.
Hedging
- dürfte + infinitive: probable, not certain. Das dürfte schwierig werden.
- Ich würde sagen …: an opinion offered softly.
- Es wäre zu prüfen, ob …: a formal suggestion.
- Ich wüsste nicht, dass …: a polite but firm contradiction, "I'm not aware that …".
- Das dürfte nicht ganz einfach werden. That's likely to be far from easy.
- Ich wüsste nicht, dass wir das so vereinbart hätten.I'm not aware that we agreed on that.
- Es wäre zu prüfen, ob die Zahlen stimmen. It would need to be checked whether the figures are correct.
Almost, and done
Fast or beinahe + Konjunktiv II past means it nearly happened, but didn't. And Das hätten wir or Das wäre geschafft marks a task as finished.
- Fast hätte ich den letzten Zug verpasst.I almost missed the last train.
- So, das wäre geschafft.Right, that's done.
Irony and reproach
- Du hättest ja auch mal anrufen können! You could have called, you know!
- Das wäre ja noch schöner!Certainly not!
Das wäre ja noch schöner looks like "that would be even nicer" but is a sharp refusal. Wer hätte das gedacht! expresses surprise.
hätte, wäre or würde?
Sein, haben, the modal verbs and wissen use their own forms (wäre, hätte, könnte, wüsste); most other verbs use würde + infinitive. In the past, only hätte or wäre + participle: Wenn er gekommen wäre, not würde gekommen sein.
Hedging Konjunktiv is not weakness. In German meetings and e-mails, Ich würde vorschlagen and Es wäre gut, wenn are how competent people disagree politely.
Common mistakes
Wenn ich würde mehr Zeit haben, …Use the verb's own form: Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte.Fast habe ich den Zug verpasst. The standard form for "nearly" is Fast hätte ich den Zug verpasst.- Taking Das wäre ja noch schöner as approval. It is a refusal.
Er würde gekommen sein, wenn …In the past use Er wäre gekommen, wenn …- Ich will ein Bier to a waiter sounds blunt. Say Ich hätte gern ein Bier.
