Konjunktiv II in the past: hätte gemacht, wäre gegangen

Talk about what would have happened, and express regrets: I should have…, if only I had…

Part of the free B1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

In Konjunktiv II: wishes and unreal conditions you imagined the present: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. To imagine a different past, the one that didn't happen, use the past Konjunktiv II: If I had had time, I would have come.

Form: hätte / wäre + Partizip II

It is the Plusquamperfekt with an umlaut: hätte or wäre + Partizip II. Verbs that take sein in the Perfekt take wäre; all others take hätte.

Present (unreal)Past (unreal)
haben-verbich würde kaufenich hätte gekauft
sein-verbich würde gehenich wäre gegangen
seinich wäreich wäre gewesen
habenich hätteich hätte gehabt

The same form works in both halves of the sentence: no würde is needed.

  • Wenn ich früher aufgestanden wäre, hätte ich den Bus nicht verpasst. If I had got up earlier, I wouldn't have missed the bus.
  • Wenn du mich gefragt hättest, hätte ich dir geholfen. If you had asked me, I would have helped you.
  • Ohne deine Hilfe hätte ich das nie geschafft.Without your help, I would never have managed it.
  • Wir wären gern länger in Salzburg geblieben. We would have liked to stay in Salzburg longer.
  • Hätte ich das nur gewusst! If only I had known that!
  • Fast wäre ich zu spät gekommen.I was almost late.

Regrets and criticism with modal verbs

Should have, could have, would have had to use hätte + infinitive + modal infinitive. The modal verb stays in the infinitive (sollen, können, müssen), so there are two infinitives at the end.

  • Ich hätte mehr für die Prüfung lernen sollen.I should have studied more for the exam.
  • Du hättest mich anrufen können. You could have called me.
EnglishGerman
I should have asked.Ich hätte fragen sollen.
You could have told me.Du hättest es mir sagen können.
We would have had to wait.Wir hätten warten müssen.

With fast or beinahe (almost), German uses the past Konjunktiv II for something that nearly happened but didn't: Fast hätte ich den Zug verpasst. (I almost missed the train.)

Common mistakes

  • Ich hätte gegangen. Gehen takes sein: Ich wäre gegangen.
  • Wenn ich es gewusst hätte, würde ich gekommen sein. Correct but very clumsy. Say …, wäre ich gekommen.
  • Ich hätte lernen gesollt. With a second verb the modal stays in the infinitive: Ich hätte lernen sollen.
  • Ich sollte mehr gelernt haben. This means "I'm supposed to have studied more". For I should have, say Ich hätte mehr lernen sollen.
  • Wenn ich das gewusst hatte, … Without the umlaut it is the real past: gewusst hätte.
