Some conjunctions come in pairs, like English either … or. They can link single words, phrases or whole clauses.

GermanEnglishMeaning
entweder … odereither … orone of two
weder … nochneither … nornot one and not the other
sowohl … als auchboth … andone and the other
nicht nur … sondern auchnot only … but alsoone and, surprisingly, the other too

entweder … oder

  • Wir fahren entweder mit dem Zug oder mit dem Auto. We're going either by train or by car.
  • Entweder du räumst dein Zimmer auf, oder du bleibst zu Hause.Either you tidy your room or you stay at home.

Entweder at the start of a clause can be followed by normal word order (Entweder du räumst…) or by the verb (Entweder räumst du…). Both are correct; the first is more common in speech.

weder … noch

Weder … noch already contains the negation, so there is no nicht or kein as well.

  • Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.I drink neither coffee nor tea.
  • Er hat weder angerufen noch eine Nachricht geschickt. He neither called nor sent a message.

sowohl … als auch

  • Sie spricht sowohl Englisch als auch Französisch. She speaks both English and French.
  • Sowohl meine Schwester als auch mein Bruder wohnen in Köln.Both my sister and my brother live in Cologne.

Sowohl … wie auch is a less common variant. When two subjects are linked, the verb is normally plural (wohnen).

nicht nur … sondern auch

  • Das Hotel war nicht nur billig, sondern auch sehr schön.The hotel was not only cheap but also very nice.
  • Lena arbeitet nicht nur als Lehrerin, sondern schreibt auch Bücher.Lena not only works as a teacher but also writes books.

Commas: always put a comma before sondern. When the pairs link single words or phrases, there is no comma before oder, noch or als auch.

Common mistakes

  • Ich habe weder kein Geld noch keine Zeit. No double negative: Ich habe weder Geld noch Zeit.
  • sowohl Tee und auch Kaffee: the partner of sowohl is als auch.
  • nicht nur billig, aber auch schön: after nicht nur comes sondern auch.
  • entweder heute noch morgen: entweder goes with oder, weder with noch.
  • Das Hotel war nicht nur billig sondern auch schön. The comma before sondern is required.
