Indirect questions: Weißt du, ob…? Wissen Sie, wo…?

ob for yes/no questions, the W-word for open questions, and the verb at the end

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

An indirect question is a question tucked inside another sentence: Do you know where the station is? They are the polite way to ask strangers, in shops and on the phone. In German they work like weil and dass clauses (weil and dass: the verb goes to the end): the conjugated verb goes to the end.

  • A yes/no question becomes an indirect question with ob (whether, if).
  • A W-question keeps its W-word: wo, wann, wie, was, wer, warum, wie viel.
Direct questionIndirect question
Kommt Anna heute?Weißt du, ob Anna heute kommt?
Wo ist der Bahnhof?Können Sie mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist?
Wann fährt der Zug ab?Ich weiß nicht, wann der Zug abfährt.
Darf man hier parken?Weißt du, ob man hier parken darf?

Useful openings: Weißt du, ...? Wissen Sie, ...? Können Sie mir sagen, ...? Ich weiß nicht, ... Ich frage mich, ... Er fragt, ... The sentence ends with a question mark only if the whole sentence is a question.

  • Weißt du, ob Jonas heute Abend kommt?Do you know if Jonas is coming tonight?
  • Können Sie mir sagen, wo die Post ist?Can you tell me where the post office is?
  • Ich weiß nicht, wie viel das kostet.I don't know how much that costs.
  • Wissen Sie, wann der nächste Zug nach Köln fährt?Do you know when the next train to Cologne leaves?
  • Ich frage mich, ob ich die richtige Entscheidung getroffen habe.I wonder whether I made the right decision.
  • Der Kellner fragt, was wir trinken möchten. The waiter asks what we'd like to drink.
  • Kannst du mir sagen, warum du so spät bist? Can you tell me why you're so late?

ob, wenn or wann?

English if can mean whether (an open question) or a condition. Only the condition is wenn (wenn or als? Saying 'when'). If you could say whether in English, use ob. If you mean at what time, use wann.

Ask strangers with Entschuldigung, können Sie mir sagen, ...? It sounds much more polite than a direct question.
