English when has three German partners: als, wenn and wann. Choosing between them depends on the time and on whether it happened once.

UseWordExample
One event or one period in the pastalsAls ich ein Kind war, ...
Repeated events, past or present (whenever)wennImmer wenn ich Zeit habe, ...
A single event now or in the futurewennWenn ich in Hamburg bin, ...
A condition (if)wennWenn es regnet, ...
A question (when?), direct or indirectwannWann kommst du?

als and wenn start a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end, just like after weil (weil and dass: the verb goes to the end). If the clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb.

When I was a child, I had a dog.
When the film was over, we went home.
  • Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich schwimmen. When I have time, I go swimming.
Whenever I go to Munich, I visit my aunt.
If it rains tomorrow, we'll stay at home.
  • Ruf mich an, wenn du in Hamburg bist.Call me when you're in Hamburg.

Repeated in the past: wenn

Als is only for one occasion. If something happened again and again in the past, use (immer) wenn or jedes Mal, wenn.

Every time I saw him, he was in a good mood.

wann is for questions

wann asks about time, in direct questions and in indirect ones (Indirect questions: Weißt du, ob…? Wissen Sie, wo…?).

  • Wann beginnt der Kurs? When does the course start?
  • Ich weiß nicht, wann der Bus kommt.I don't know when the bus is coming.

Als: once, in the past. Wann: a question. Wenn: every other when, and if.
