German grammar lessons › Level B2 › Konjunktiv II: würde, hätte, wäre

als ob and als: acting as if

Describe how something seems with als ob / als wenn + Konjunktiv II (verb at the end) or als + Konjunktiv II (verb straight after als).

To say that someone behaves as if something were true, or that something seems a certain way, German uses als ob (or als wenn) or simply als, with the verb in Konjunktiv II (Konjunktiv II: wishes and unreal conditions, Konjunktiv II in the past: hätte gemacht, wäre gegangen). The Konjunktiv shows that the comparison is unreal or uncertain.

Typical main-clause verbs: so tun (to pretend), aussehen, klingen, riechen, schmecken, sich fühlen, wirken, sich benehmen.

Two word orders

ConstructionWord orderExample
als ob / als wennverb at the endEr tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste.
alsverb directly after alsEr tut so, als wüsste er nichts.

The meaning is the same. Plain als is slightly more formal; als ob is the most common in speech.

Time

Time of the comparisonFormExample
same timeKonjunktiv II (or würde)als ob er krank wäre
earlierhätte / wäre + participleals ob er die ganze Nacht gearbeitet hätte
laterwürde + infinitiveals ob es gleich regnen würde
  • Er tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste. He acts as if he knew nothing.
  • Du siehst aus, als hättest du die ganze Nacht nicht geschlafen. You look as if you haven't slept all night.

  • Der Himmel sieht aus, als würde es gleich regnen. The sky looks as if it's going to rain any minute.
  • Er fährt, als wenn er allein auf der Straße wäre.He drives as if he were alone on the road.

In writing you will also see Konjunktiv I after als: Er tat, als sei nichts geschehen. In relaxed speech people sometimes use the indicative: Er tut so, als ob er krank ist. Both are understood; Konjunktiv II is the safe standard choice.

Common mistakes

  • Er tut so, als ob er wüsste nichts. After als ob the verb goes to the end: als ob er nichts wüsste.
  • Er tut so, als er wüsste nichts. After plain als the verb comes first: als wüsste er nichts.
  • Er benahm sich, wie er der Chef wäre. English like is als ob or als here, not wie.
  • Sie sah aus, als ob sie geweint hat. For an earlier event use Konjunktiv II past: als ob sie geweint hätte.

Sie lächelte, als hätte sie gewonnen. — als + verb first (als hätte sie gewonnen), or als ob + verb last (als ob sie gewonnen hätte).
