Obwohl, trotzdem and dennoch (Reasons and contrasts: da, zumal, infolgedessen, dennoch, wohingegen) cover everyday concession. Formal and literary German has a richer set, and some of them change the shape of the sentence.

Formal obwohl

Wenngleich, obgleich, obschon and wiewohl mean obwohl and send the verb to the end. Wiewohl is the most elevated. Wenngleich can also link two adjectives or phrases without a verb.

  • Der Film war spannend, wenngleich etwas zu lang. The film was gripping, albeit a little too long.
  • Wiewohl er die Gefahr kannte, setzte er die Reise fort.Although he knew the danger, he continued the journey.

so … auch, wie … auch, was … auch

These say "however much", "whatever", "wherever". The verb goes to the end of the concessive clause. The main clause that follows usually keeps its own normal word order, though inversion also occurs.

PatternMeaning
So sehr ich mich auch bemühte, …However hard I tried, …
Wie spät es auch ist, …However late it is, …
Was du auch sagst, …Whatever you say, …
Wo (auch) immer du bist, …Wherever you are, …
Und wenn er noch so bettelt, …No matter how much he begs, …
  • So sehr ich mich auch bemühte, ich verstand kein Wort. However hard I tried, I didn't understand a word.
  • Was du auch sagst, ich ändere meine Meinung nicht.Whatever you say, I'm not changing my mind.
  • Und wenn du noch so bettelst, du bekommst kein Eis mehr.No matter how much you beg, you're not getting any more ice cream.

mag … auch

Mögen at the start, often with auch, concedes a point before the main clause rejects its consequence. It is formal, written style; Mag sein, dass … is the everyday version.

  • Mag er auch reich sein, glücklich ist er nicht. He may be rich, but he isn't happy.

zwar … aber, dafür

Zwar concedes, aber or dafür (on the other hand) answers.

  • Zwar ist die Wohnung klein, dafür liegt sie sehr zentral. The flat is small, admittedly, but it's very central.

Prepositions and set phrases

Ungeachtet + genitive (regardless of), trotz + genitive, bei aller + dative (for all …):

  • Ungeachtet aller Warnungen fuhren sie bei Sturm auf den See hinaus.Regardless of all warnings, they went out on the lake in a storm.
  • Bei aller Sympathie, das kann ich nicht akzeptieren. With all due sympathy, I can't accept that.

Auch is what makes so sehr ich mich bemühte concessive. Without it, the clause can sound like the start of a result: "I tried so hard that …".

Common mistakes

  • Wenngleich er war müde, … Wenngleich is subordinating: wenngleich er müde war.
  • So sehr ich bemühte mich auch, … The verb goes to the end: so sehr ich mich auch bemühte.
  • Trotz er müde war, … Trotz is a preposition. With a clause use obwohl.
  • Using wiewohl in a chat with friends. It sounds pompous.
  • Ungeachtet den Warnungen in formal writing: ungeachtet der Warnungen (genitive).
