German has a future tense with werden, but it uses it much less than English uses will. Most of the time, Germans talk about the future with the present tense and a time word.

1. Present tense + time word (most common)

When it is clear from a word like morgen, nächste Woche, im Sommer, bald that you mean the future, just use the present. Remember that the time word can go first, and then the verb comes second (Time first: Heute gehe ich …).

  • Morgen fahre ich nach Hamburg.Tomorrow I'm going to Hamburg.
  • Nächstes Jahr beginnt Lena ein Studium.Next year Lena is starting university.

2. werden + infinitive

Conjugate werden in position 2 and put the infinitive at the end, like a modal verb.

Personwerden
ichwerde
duwirst
er, sie, eswird
wirwerden
ihrwerdet
sie, Siewerden

Use it especially for: - predictions: Es wird regnen. - promises and firm intentions: Ich werde dich anrufen. - the future when there is no time word, or to stress that something will really happen.

  • Es wird heute Abend regnen. It's going to rain this evening.
  • Ich werde dich jeden Tag anrufen.I'll call you every day.
  • Wirst du am Samstag mitkommen? Will you come along on Saturday?
  • In zehn Jahren werden wir in einem Haus am See wohnen. In ten years we'll be living in a house by a lake.
  • Keine Sorge, ich werde pünktlich sein.Don't worry, I'll be on time.

werden on its own = become

Without a second verb, werden means become, get or turn: Er wird Lehrer. Es wird kalt. Max wird morgen zwanzig.

  • Mein Bruder wird Lehrer. My brother is going to be a teacher.

Be careful with English will: the German will comes from wollen and means want. Ich will kommen = I want to come. Ich werde kommen = I will come.

Common mistakes

  • Ich will morgen anrufen meaning "I will call tomorrow": will means "want". Say Ich rufe morgen an or Ich werde morgen anrufen.
  • Ich werde gehen morgen. The infinitive goes at the end: Ich werde morgen gehen.
  • du wirdst, er werdet: the forms are du wirst, er wird, ihr werdet.
  • Using werden in every future sentence: Morgen gehe ich ins Kino is the normal way to say it.
