In a café or restaurant

Ordering politely with Ich hätte gern… and Ich nehme…, and paying: Zahlen, bitte

Part of the free A1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

Ordering

The server will ask Was darf es sein? or Was möchten Sie? (What can I get you?). Three polite ways to order:

  • Ich hätte gern… I'd like… (the most polite)
  • Ich nehme… I'll have…
  • Für mich…, bitte. For me…, please.

What you order is the object of the verb, so masculine nouns take the accusative: einen Kaffee, einen Tee, ein Wasser, eine Cola (The accusative: den, einen, keinen). In a café you can also count: Einmal Apfelkuchen, bitte. Zweimal Kaffee, bitte.

  • Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee mit Milch.I'd like a coffee with milk.
  • Ich nehme die Tomatensuppe.I'll have the tomato soup.
  • Für mich ein Wasser ohne Kohlensäure, bitte.A still water for me, please.
  • Was empfehlen Sie heute? What do you recommend today?
