Your name

There are three ways to say your name:

  • Ich heiße Anna. My name is Anna. (literally "I am called Anna")
  • Mein Name ist Anna Weber. My name is Anna Weber. (a bit more formal)
  • Ich bin Anna. I'm Anna.

To ask someone's name: Wie heißt du? (friendly) or Wie heißen Sie? (polite). Which one to use is explained in du, ihr or Sie: which you?.

Where you're from and where you live

  • Ich komme aus England. I'm from England.
  • Woher kommst du? / Woher kommen Sie? Where are you from?
  • Ich wohne in Berlin. I live in Berlin.

Most country names have no article: aus Deutschland, aus Österreich, aus England, aus Kanada. A few have one, and after aus it changes: die Schweiz becomes aus der Schweiz, die Türkei becomes aus der Türkei, and die USA becomes aus den USA.
