The passive: wird gebaut, wurde gebaut
Focus on what happens, not who does it: werden + Partizip II, with von for the doer.

In an active sentence the subject does something: Der Koch bereitet das Essen zu. In a passive sentence the focus is on what happens, and the doer is unimportant or unknown: Das Essen wird zubereitet. (The food is being prepared.) German uses the passive a lot in instructions, news, reports and descriptions of processes.
Form: werden + Partizip II
The conjugated form of werden is the verb in position 2, and the Partizip II goes to the end.
| Person | Present | Präteritum |
|---|---|---|
| ich | werde gefragt | wurde gefragt |
| du | wirst gefragt | wurdest gefragt |
| er / sie / es | wird gefragt | wurde gefragt |
| wir | werden gefragt | wurden gefragt |
| ihr | werdet gefragt | wurdet gefragt |
| sie / Sie | werden gefragt | wurden gefragt |
From active to passive
The accusative object of the active sentence becomes the subject (nominative) of the passive sentence. The old subject either disappears or comes back with von + dative.

Passive without a subject
Verbs without an accusative object can still go into the passive to describe an activity in general: Hier wird nicht geraucht. (No smoking here.) Bei uns wird viel gelacht. (We laugh a lot.) The verb is always singular. Often the sentence starts with es: Es wird getanzt.
Werden has three jobs: Er wird Arzt (becomes), Er wird morgen kommen (future, The future: werden, and the present for plans) and Er wird gefragt (passive). Look at the end of the sentence: a Partizip II means passive, an infinitive means future.
Process or state?
Die Tür wird geschlossen = someone is closing the door (process). Die Tür ist geschlossen = the door is closed (a state). English "is closed" can mean both; German chooses.
