You know the werden passive, the state passive (The state passive: Die Tür ist geschlossen) and its alternatives (Alternatives to the passive: man, sich lassen, sein + zu, -bar). German can also make a passive from verbs that have no accusative object, which English cannot.

The impersonal passive

Intransitive verbs of activity (arbeiten, tanzen, rauchen, lachen, feiern) form a passive with no subject at all. The verb is always third person singular. It describes the activity itself, with no one in particular doing it.

  • Hier wird nicht geraucht. There's no smoking here.
  • Auf der Hochzeit wurde bis drei Uhr morgens getanzt. At the wedding there was dancing until three in the morning.

If nothing else fills the first position, es is used as a placeholder. As soon as something else moves there, es disappears.

With placeholderWithout
Es wird gebeten, die Türen zu schließen.Die Gäste werden gebeten, die Türen zu schließen.
Es wurde viel gelacht.Am Abend wurde viel gelacht.

The impersonal passive is also a firm, almost military instruction: Jetzt wird geschlafen! (Now it's time for bed, no arguing!)

  • Jetzt wird aber geschlafen! Now it's time to sleep, and no arguing!

Verbs with a dative object

Helfen, danken, gratulieren, folgen, widersprechen, kündigen and antworten take a dative object. In the passive, that dative stays dative. It does not become a subject, so there is no subject and the verb stays singular.

  • Mir wurde sofort geholfen.I was helped straight away.
  • Dem Mitarbeiter wurde nach zehn Jahren gekündigt. The employee was dismissed after ten years.
  • Den Betroffenen muss schnell geholfen werden. Those affected must be helped quickly.

With verbs that have both a dative and an accusative (geben, mitteilen, anbieten, sagen), the accusative becomes the subject and the dative stays: Mir wurde ein Job angeboten. When the "thing" is a clause, there is again no subject:

  • Uns wurde mitgeteilt, dass der Kurs ausfällt. We were informed that the course is cancelled.

The bekommen passive

With giving verbs (schenken, schicken, erstatten, überreichen) the receiver can become the subject using bekommen + Partizip II. In speech, kriegen is common.

  • Sie bekam den Preis von der Bürgermeisterin überreicht. She was presented with the prize by the mayor.

English "I was told / I was helped / I was given" become Mir wurde gesagt / Mir wurde geholfen / Mir wurde gegeben or Ich bekam … geschenkt. The English subject is the German dative.

Common mistakes

  • Ich wurde geholfen. The dative stays: Mir wurde geholfen.
  • Ich wurde gesagt, dass … Mir wurde gesagt, dass …
  • Den Kindern wurden geholfen. There is no plural subject, so the verb stays singular: wurde.
  • Hier wird es nicht geraucht. The placeholder es only stands in first position.
  • Er wurde gekündigt is common in speech, but the standard is Ihm wurde gekündigt.
