nicht or kein?

From nicht or kein?: kein negates a noun with ein or no article (Ich habe kein Auto); nicht negates everything else.

Where nicht goes

When nicht negates the whole sentence, it goes towards the end: after the verb, after objects and pronouns, and after most time words like heute.

  • Ich verstehe dich nicht.I don't understand you.
  • Wir kommen heute nicht. We're not coming today.

But nicht comes before these, which belong at the end of the sentence:

Before…example
an adjective after seinDas Hotel ist nicht teuer.
a place or directionIch gehe nicht nach Hause.
a participleEr hat den Brief nicht geschrieben.
an infinitive after a modalIch kann heute nicht kommen.
a separable prefixIch rufe dich nicht an.
  • Das Hotel ist nicht teuer. The hotel isn't expensive.
  • Er hat den Brief nicht geschrieben. He didn't write the letter.

To negate just one part of a sentence, put nicht right before it and add the correct part with sondern (but rather):

  • Ich fahre nicht nach Hamburg, sondern nach Bremen.I'm not going to Hamburg but to Bremen.

Not any more, not yet, never

  • Lena wohnt nicht mehr in Köln.Lena doesn't live in Cologne any more.
  • Wir haben keine Milch mehr. We've got no milk left.
  • Der Bus ist noch nicht da.The bus isn't here yet.
  • Ich trinke nie Kaffee.I never drink coffee.

The order is fixed: noch nicht (not yet) and nicht mehr (not any more). With a noun, kein comes before the noun and mehr after it: keine Zeit mehr.

Common mistakes

  • Ich nicht verstehe. → Ich verstehe nicht. The verb stays in second position.
  • Ich habe nicht Zeit. → Ich habe keine Zeit. A noun without an article takes kein.
  • Ich gehe nach Hause nicht. → Ich gehe nicht nach Hause.
  • Ich rufe nicht dich an. → Ich rufe dich nicht an. Pronouns come before nicht.
  • nicht mehr Milch → keine Milch mehr.
  • nicht noch → noch nicht.
