nicht or kein?

German has two words for not. Which one you need depends on what you negate.

kein: "not a", "no", "not any"

Use kein for a noun that would have ein/eine or no article:

kein takes the same endings as ein: kein (der and das words), keine (die words and plurals), and keinen where ein would be einen (see haben: to have).

nicht: everything else

Use nicht to negate:

• a verb or the whole sentence: Jonas kommt heute nicht.
• an adjective: Das Hotel ist nicht teuer.
• a noun with der, die, das or mein, dein: Das ist nicht mein Buch.
• a place or a name: Ich wohne nicht in Berlin. Das ist nicht Anna.

Where does nicht go?

• To negate the whole sentence, nicht usually goes at the end: Ich verstehe das nicht.
• It goes before an adjective or a place: nicht teuer, nicht in Berlin.

And nein is just "no" as an answer: Nein, ich habe kein Auto.

• Ich habe kein Auto.I don't have a car.
• Wir haben keine Kinder.We don't have any children.
• Das ist keine gute Idee.That's not a good idea.
• Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.I don't drink coffee.
• Jonas kommt heute nicht.Jonas isn't coming today.
• Das Hotel ist nicht teuer.The hotel isn't expensive.
• Ich verstehe das nicht.I don't understand that.
• Das ist nicht mein Buch.That's not my book.

A quick test: if you could say ein or nothing before the noun, use kein. Otherwise, use nicht.

Common mistakes

• Ich habe nicht ein Auto. Use kein: Ich habe kein Auto.
• Ich habe nicht Zeit. No article, so kein: Ich habe keine Zeit.
• Das ist kein gut. Adjectives take nicht: Das ist nicht gut.
• Ich nicht komme. nicht doesn't go before the verb: Ich komme nicht.
• Using nein inside a sentence: Ich habe nein Auto. nein only answers a question.
