Negation in nuance: keineswegs, nicht einmal, kaum, weder … noch
Strong and weak negation, 'not even', 'hardly', 'neither … nor', and understatement through double negation.
Part of the free C1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.
Nicht and kein do the basic work. Advanced German adds shades: how strongly you deny, what you deny, and saying something positive by denying its opposite.
Strong negation
| Word | Meaning | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| keineswegs | by no means | statements, rejecting a claim |
| keinesfalls, auf keinen Fall | under no circumstances | rules, instructions, refusals |
| gar nicht, überhaupt nicht | not at all | everyday speech |
| ganz und gar nicht | not in the least | emphatic |
- Das ist keineswegs selbstverständlich. That is by no means a matter of course.
- Die Tür darf keinesfalls offen bleiben. The door must under no circumstances be left open.
nicht einmal: not even
Nicht einmal (spoken nicht mal) goes directly before the part it focuses on. Its positive partner is sogar.
- Er hat sich nicht einmal bedankt. He didn't even say thank you.
kaum: hardly, barely
Kaum is a weak negation on its own; never add nicht. At the start of a sentence it also means "no sooner … than".
- Ich habe letzte Nacht kaum geschlafen.I hardly slept last night.
- Kaum war sie zu Hause, fing es an zu regnen. She had barely got home when it started to rain.
weder … noch: neither … nor
Weder … noch already negates. Don't add nicht or kein.
- Wir haben weder Zeit noch Geld für eine lange Reise. We have neither the time nor the money for a long trip.
Double negation as understatement
Standard German has no "negative concord": two negations cancel out. That is used for litotes, a cautious, often ironic positive. Nicht unwichtig means "quite important".
- Diese Frage ist nicht ganz unwichtig. This question is not entirely unimportant.
- Seine Sorge ist nicht unbegründet. His concern is not unfounded.
Some dialects use double negation for emphasis (Da hat keiner nix gesagt). That is not standard.
The extra nicht after bevor and bis
In speech, a negated main clause followed by bevor or bis often has a second nicht that does not negate anything. It is common and accepted.
- Du gehst nicht nach draußen, bevor du nicht deine Hausaufgaben gemacht hast. You're not going outside until you've done your homework.
Keineswegs rejects a statement (Das ist keineswegs sicher); keinesfalls forbids or refuses (Das darfst du keinesfalls tun).
Common mistakes
Ich habe nicht keine Zeit. Two negations make a positive: "I do have some time".Er hat weder Zeit noch kein Geld.No extra negation after weder … noch.Er hat einmal nicht angerufen.for "not even": the order is nicht einmal.Ich habe kaum nicht geschlafen.Kaum is already negative.- Using keineswegs for a prohibition: write keinesfalls.
