welcher: which one?
Use welch- when you choose from a known set: which bus, which colour, which book. It takes the same endings as der, die, das.

After a dative preposition it takes dative endings, like dem and der (The dative: dem, der, den): in welcher Stadt (die Stadt), mit welchem Bus (der Bus).
was für ein: what kind of?
Use was für ein when you ask about the kind or type of thing, not a choice from a list. ein takes the ending the noun needs in the sentence; für does not change it.
- Was für ein Auto hast du?What kind of car do you have?
- Was für einen Job hat deine Schwester?What kind of job does your sister have?
With a plural or an uncountable noun (Musik, Wetter, Kaffee) there is no ein: just was für.

Was für ein…! can also be an exclamation: Was für ein Tag! (What a day!)
Common mistakes
Welche Film möchtest du sehen?→ Welchen Film…? der Film as an object takes -en.Was Farbe…?→ Welche Farbe…? “What colour” is welche Farbe.Was für eine Auto?→ Was für ein Auto? das Auto is neuter.Was für ein Musik?→ Was für Musik? No ein with uncountable nouns.
