Es regnet: weather verbs

Like English it's raining, German weather sentences use es. Some weather is a verb:

GermanEnglish
Es regnet.It's raining.
Es schneit.It's snowing.
Die Sonne scheint. The sun is shining.
Es donnert. Es blitzt. It's thundering. There's lightning.
  • Heute regnet es den ganzen Tag.It's raining all day today.
  • Im Winter schneit es oft in den Alpen. It often snows in the Alps in winter.

Es ist kalt: weather adjectives

Other weather is es ist + adjective (no ending, see Adjectives after sein: Das Haus ist groß):

GermanEnglish
Es ist warm, heiß.It's warm, hot.
Es ist kühl, kalt. It's cool, cold.
Es ist sonnig, windig. It's sunny, windy.
Es ist bewölkt, neblig. It's cloudy, foggy.
Es ist schön.It's nice weather.
  • Die Sonne scheint und es ist warm. The sun is shining and it's warm.
  • Im Herbst ist es oft windig und neblig. In autumn it's often windy and foggy.

The nouns: der Regen (rain), der Schnee (snow), die Sonne (sun), der Wind, das Gewitter (thunderstorm), die Wolke (cloud).

Asking and the temperature

  • Wie ist das Wetter bei euch? What's the weather like where you are?
  • Es sind heute nur drei Grad. It's only three degrees today.
  • Morgen wird es sonnig.Tomorrow it will be sunny.

Temperature uses es sind + number + Grad (Celsius). Below zero: minus fünf Grad. In southern Germany and Austria you will also hear Es hat zwanzig Grad.

Seasons and months

All four seasons are masculine: der Frühling (spring), der Sommer, der Herbst (autumn), der Winter. So are the months. “In” a season or month is im (in dem).

  • Im Sommer fahren wir an die Ostsee. In summer we go to the Baltic coast.
  • Mein Lieblingsmonat ist der Mai.My favourite month is May.

In Austria January is Jänner. It's the normal Austrian word, not a mistake.

Common mistakes

  • Es ist regnen. → Es regnet. Rain is a verb.
  • in Sommer → im Sommer.
  • Ich bin heiß. → Mir ist heiß. How the weather feels to you takes mir.
  • Es ist zwanzig Grade. → Es sind zwanzig Grad. Grad doesn't change in the plural.
  • die Winter (one winter) → der Winter.
