Word order in the middle: time, reason, manner, place

Put adverbials and objects in a natural order between the two parts of the verb.

Part of the free B1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

German main clauses have a fixed frame: the conjugated verb in position 2, and any second verb part (participle, infinitive, prefix) at the end. Everything in between is the Mittelfeld, the middle field. You met the basics in Time first: Heute gehe ich … and Telling what happened: the Perfekt in conversation; here is the full picture.

Adverbials: TeKaMoLo

When several adverbials meet in the middle, the neutral order is:

TeKaMoLo
temporal: when?kausal: why?modal: how?lokal: where?
morgen, um achtwegen der Konferenzmit dem Zugnach Hamburg
  • Ich fahre morgen wegen der Konferenz mit dem Zug nach Hamburg.Tomorrow I'm going to Hamburg by train because of the conference.
  • Wir sind am Wochenende mit dem Fahrrad an den See gefahren. We cycled to the lake at the weekend.
  • Lena ist gestern vor Müdigkeit im Kino eingeschlafen.Lena fell asleep in the cinema yesterday because she was so tired.

Most sentences have only two or three of these. Keep the order of the ones you have. Any one of them can move to position 1 for emphasis, and the subject then follows the verb:

  • Morgen fahre ich mit dem Bus zur Arbeit.Tomorrow I'm taking the bus to work.

Objects: pronouns first

With a dative and an accusative object:

ObjectsOrderExample
two nounsdative, then accusativeIch gebe meiner Schwester das Buch.
pronoun and nounpronoun firstIch gebe es meiner Schwester.
two pronounsaccusative, then dativeIch gebe es ihr.
  • Ich gebe meiner Schwester das Buch.I'm giving my sister the book.
  • Ich gebe es meiner Schwester.I'm giving it to my sister.
  • Ich gebe es ihr morgen.I'll give it to her tomorrow.

Pronouns are short and come right after the verb, even before the time: Ich gebe es ihr morgen. They even come before a noun subject: Gestern hat mir der Chef eine E-Mail geschickt.

  • Hast du ihm das Geld schon gegeben?Have you given him the money yet?

A quick rule for the middle field: pronouns first, then the rest in TeKaMoLo order, and the place last. Definite nouns that are already known may come before the time, but pronouns always come early.

Common mistakes

  • Ich fahre nach Berlin morgen: the place comes after the time: Ich fahre morgen nach Berlin.
  • Ich gebe ihm es: two pronouns: accusative first: Ich gebe es ihm.
  • Ich gebe das Buch ihr: a pronoun comes before a noun: Ich gebe ihr das Buch.
  • Morgen ich fahre nach Köln: only one element before the verb: Morgen fahre ich nach Köln.
  • Ich habe gegeben es ihm: the participle goes to the end: Ich habe es ihm gegeben.
