Adjectives with no article: frischer Kaffee, kaltes Wasser

Without an article, the adjective carries the article's ending itself

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

Often there is no article at all before an adjective and noun: with food and drink (frischer Kaffee), materials, plurals (nette Leute), after numbers (zwei kleine Kinder), after viele, einige, wenige, and in greetings and wishes (Guten Morgen!). Then the adjective has to do the article's job. It takes the strong endings, which are almost exactly the endings of der, die, das.

MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativefrischer Kaffeefrische Milchfrisches Brotfrische Eier
Accusativefrischen Kaffeefrische Milchfrisches Brotfrische Eier
Dativefrischem Kaffeefrischer Milchfrischem Brotfrischen Eiern
Genitivefrischen Kaffeesfrischer Milchfrischen Brotesfrischer Eier

Put the article next to it: der → -er, die → -e, das → -es, den → -en, dem → -em, der (feminine dative) → -er. The only exception is the masculine and neuter genitive (-en), which you will rarely need.

  • Ich trinke morgens schwarzen Kaffee.I drink black coffee in the morning.
  • Bei Hitze trinke ich nur kaltes Wasser. In hot weather I only drink cold water.
  • Es gibt frische Milch im Kühlschrank. There's fresh milk in the fridge.
  • Er kocht gern mit frischem Gemüse.He likes cooking with fresh vegetables.
  • Bei schlechtem Wetter bleiben wir zu Hause. In bad weather we stay at home.
  • Wir suchen nette Kollegen. We are looking for nice colleagues.
  • Das Haus hat drei große Zimmer. The house has three big rooms.
  • Viele junge Leute wohnen in Berlin.Lots of young people live in Berlin.

Greetings and wishes

Many set phrases are really accusative objects of Ich wünsche dir (I wish you), so masculine words take -en: Guten Tag! Guten Appetit! Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Neuter ones take -es: Schönes Wochenende! Letters end in the dative plural: Mit freundlichen Grüßen or Viele Grüße.

  • Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!Happy birthday!
  • Schönes Wochenende!Have a nice weekend!

No article? Then the adjective plays the article: dem → -em, der → -er, das → -es.

Common mistakes

  • frisches Kaffee → frischer Kaffee. Kaffee is der, so -er.
  • mit kalte Milch → mit kalter Milch. Feminine dative: der → -er.
  • Gute Morgen! → Guten Morgen! It is an accusative: (Ich wünsche dir einen) guten Morgen.
  • Mit freundlichen Gruß → Mit freundlichen Grüßen.
  • viele neuen Wörter → viele neue Wörter. After viele the adjective takes the strong ending.
