Comparatives and superlatives before a noun

Say ein größeres Auto and die beste Idee: the comparative and superlative take normal adjective endings.

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

In Comparing: größer als, so groß wie and The superlative: am schnellsten, der schnellste the comparative and superlative came after the noun: Das Auto ist größer. Dieses Auto ist am schnellsten. After sein there is no ending.

When the comparative or superlative stands before a noun, it behaves like any other adjective: it takes the same endings you learned in Adjective endings after der, die, das, Adjective endings after ein, kein, mein and Adjectives with no article: frischer Kaffee, kaltes Wasser. You build it in two steps.

  1. Make the comparative (größer) or the superlative stem (größt-).
  2. Add the adjective ending the article and case need (ein größeres Auto, die größte Stadt).

Comparative + ending

The comparative already ends in -er, and then the ending comes on top. This gives forms like größeres, älterer, billigeren, which look long but follow the normal rules.

after der, die, dasafter ein, eine, mein
masculine (nominative)der ältere Bruderein älterer Bruder
femininedie größere Wohnungeine größere Wohnung
neuterdas schnellere Autoein schnelleres Auto
masculine (accusative)den billigeren Tarifeinen billigeren Tarif
dativemit dem neueren Handymit einem neueren Handy
  • Wir brauchen eine größere Wohnung. We need a bigger flat.
  • Mein älterer Bruder wohnt in Hamburg. My older brother lives in Hamburg.
  • Gibt es auch einen günstigeren Tarif? Is there a cheaper plan as well?
  • Wir nehmen den schnelleren Zug.We'll take the faster train.
  • Sie hat ein besseres Angebot bekommen. She got a better offer.

Superlative + ending

Before a noun, the superlative almost always comes with the definite article (or a possessive like mein): der / die / das + -st- + ending. There is no am here: am schnellsten is only for the form after the verb.

example
masculineder schönste Tag, den schönsten Tag
femininedie beste Idee
neuterdas höchste Haus, im höchsten Haus
pluraldie teuersten Restaurants
with meinmein bester Freund, meine beste Freundin
  • Das ist die beste Idee. That's the best idea.
  • Lena wohnt im höchsten Haus in unserer Straße.Lena lives in the tallest building on our street.
  • Mit dem neueren Handy mache ich bessere Fotos. With the newer phone I take better photos.

Irregular forms

The irregular comparatives and superlatives you already know keep their irregular stem, and then take the ending: gut, besser, best-; hoch, höher, höchst-; nah, näher, nächst-; groß, größer, größt-; alt, älter, ältest-.

Two words never take an ending: mehr (more) and weniger (less, fewer). Ich brauche mehr Zeit. Wir haben weniger Geld.

Ask yourself the same question as always: which article, which gender, which case? Then put that ending on the end of the whole word, after the -er or the -st-.

Common mistakes

  • ein größer Auto: before a noun the comparative needs an ending, ein größeres Auto.
  • Das Auto ist größeres. After sein there is no ending: Das Auto ist größer.
  • der am besten Film: am belongs only after the verb. Before a noun: der beste Film.
  • mehre Zeit or mehrere Zeit: mehr never changes. Mehrere means "several" and goes with plural nouns.
  • der hochere Berg: hoch loses its c in the comparative, der höhere Berg.
