You know the comparative: schnell, schneller (Comparing: größer als, so groß wie). The superlative (the fastest) is formed with -st and has two shapes.

  1. am ...sten after a verb or after sein, when no noun follows: Der ICE fährt am schnellsten. Dieser Weg ist am kürzesten.
  2. der, die, das ...ste before a noun, with the normal adjective endings (Adjective endings after der, die, das): der schnellste Zug, die beste Idee, mit dem schnellsten Zug. More on endings in Comparatives and superlatives before a noun.

Forming it

  • Add -st: klein → am kleinsten, der kleinste.
  • Add -est after -d, -t, -s, -ß, -sch, -z: alt → am ältesten, kurz → am kürzesten, heiß → am heißesten, interessant → am interessantesten. (Exception: groß → am größten.)
  • Many short adjectives take an umlaut, as in the comparative: alt, jung, kalt, warm, lang, kurz, groß, arm.
