German grammar lessons › Level A2 › German adjective endings

Adjective endings after ein, kein, mein

When the article has no ending, the adjective shows it: ein neuer Tisch, ein neues Bett

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

After der, die, das, the adjective only needs -e or -en (Adjective endings after der, die, das). After ein, there are three places where the article has no ending at all: masculine nominative (ein), and neuter nominative and accusative (ein). Then nobody can tell the gender from the article, so the adjective takes the ending that der or das would have: -er or -es.

MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural (kein, mein)
Nominativeein neuer Tischeine neue Lampeein neues Bettkeine neuen Stühle
Accusativeeinen neuen Tischeine neue Lampeein neues Bettkeine neuen Stühle
Dativeeinem neuen Tischeiner neuen Lampeeinem neuen Bettkeinen neuen Stühlen
Genitiveeines neuen Tischeseiner neuen Lampeeines neuen Betteskeiner neuen Stühle

Compare the two tables: only the three highlighted places change. der neue → ein neuer; das neue → ein neues. The r of der and the s of das jump onto the adjective. Everything else is the same as after der, die, das.

  • Das ist ein guter Plan. That's a good plan.
  • Ich habe einen neuen Job.I have a new job.
  • Wir haben ein großes Problem. We have a big problem.
  • Sie wohnt in einer kleinen Wohnung. She lives in a small flat.
  • Ich suche eine billige Wohnung in München.I'm looking for a cheap flat in Munich.

kein and the possessives

kein and the possessives (mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer, Ihr) follow exactly the same pattern. They also have a plural, which takes -en. Ein has no plural; a plural without an article is in Adjectives with no article: frischer Kaffee, kaltes Wasser.

  • Mein alter Freund Jonas besucht mich morgen. My old friend Jonas is visiting me tomorrow.
  • Das ist kein schlechtes Angebot. That's not a bad offer.
  • Unsere neuen Nachbarn sind sehr nett. Our new neighbours are very nice.
  • Er schreibt mit seinem roten Stift. He writes with his red pen.

The -er of unser and euer belongs to the word itself; it is not an ending. So: unser neuer Lehrer, unser neues Auto. Euer drops an e when it gets an ending: eure Wohnung.

Nominative: ein ...er for der-words, ein ...es for das-words. In the accusative only the neuter keeps -es; the masculine article becomes einen, so the adjective goes back to -en.

Common mistakes

  • ein neue Tisch → ein neuer Tisch.
  • ein kleine Kind → ein kleines Kind.
  • einen neuer Tisch → einen neuen Tisch. Once einen shows the masculine, the adjective is -en.
  • unser neue Lehrer → unser neuer Lehrer. The -er of unser is not an ending.
  • meine neue Schuhe → meine neuen Schuhe. Plural after kein and mein is always -en.
