Contracted articles – à and de + definite article

Au, aux, du, des

When the prepositions à (to, at) and de (of, from) come before le or les, they merge into one word. This is compulsory.

The contractions

Only le and les contract. La and l' never do.

With à

  • Je vais au cinéma.I'm going to the cinema.
  • Elle est à la plage.She's at the beach.
  • Il est à l'hôpital.He's in hospital.
  • Je parle aux enfants.I'm talking to the children.
  • un sandwich au fromage, une glace à la vanillea cheese sandwich, a vanilla ice cream

With de

  • Je reviens du marché.I'm coming back from the market.
  • C'est la voiture du professeur.It's the teacher's car.
  • la porte de la maisonthe door of the house
  • le bruit des voituresthe noise of the cars
  • Il joue du piano.He plays the piano.

Possession

French has no 's. Use de: le livre de Marie (Marie's book), la voiture du voisin (the neighbour's car).

Proper names don't take an article, so no contraction: Je parle à Paul, Je viens de Lyon.
