Zero article with professions
Il est médecin – no 'a'
In English we say She is a doctor. In French, after être (and devenir, rester), a profession, nationality or religion usually takes no article.
No article after être
- Je suis professeur.I'm a teacher.
- Il est ingénieur. He's an engineer.
- Elle est avocate.She's a lawyer.
- Mon frère veut devenir pilote. My brother wants to become a pilot.
Here the profession works like an adjective that describes the person, so it agrees: il est infirmier / elle est infirmière.
When the article comes back
1. With c'est / ce sont. C'est must be followed by a determiner:
- C'est un médecin.He's a doctor.
- C'est une actrice célèbre.She's a famous actress.
2. When there's an adjective or more detail. Then it's a description of a particular person, so you need un/une:
- Elle est une excellente avocate. She's an excellent lawyer.
- Il est un professeur que j'aime beaucoup.He's a teacher I like a lot.
(Many French speakers prefer C'est une excellente avocate in this case.)
