Present conditional – formation and politeness

Je voudrais, tu pourrais

The present conditional translates English would. It's used for politeness, wishes, advice, hypotheses and future-in-the-past.

How to form it

future stem + imparfait endings

endingaimerêtrepouvoir
je-aisaimeraisseraispourrais
tu-aisaimeraisseraispourrais
il / elle-aitaimeraitseraitpourrait
nous-ionsaimerionsserionspourrions
vous-iezaimeriezseriezpourriez
ils / elles-aientaimeraientseraientpourraient

All irregular future stems apply: je ferais, j'irais, j'aurais, je voudrais, je devrais, il faudrait.

Uses

Politeness: > Je voudrais un café. = I'd like a coffee. > Pourriez-vous m'aider ? = Could you help me? > Auriez-vous l'heure ? = Would you have the time?

Wishes: > J'aimerais voyager au Japon. = I'd love to travel to Japan.

Advice (with devoir): > Tu devrais te reposer. = You should rest. > Vous devriez essayer. = You should try.

Hypotheses (with si + imparfait): Si j'avais le temps, je lirais plus. See Si clauses.

Unconfirmed news: Le président serait malade. = The president is reportedly ill.

Conditional vs future: listen carefully

  • je parlerai (will) vs je parlerais (would)

In standard pronunciation, -ai is a closed é and -ais an open è, but many speakers barely distinguish them. In writing, the s matters.
