Spanish grammar lessons › Level A1 › Gustar and verbs like it

también and tampoco; a mí también / a mí tampoco

Agreeing and disagreeing: yo también, yo tampoco, a mí sí, a mí no

Part of the free A1 Spanish course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

También: also, too

También means also, too, as well. Use it with positive sentences:

  • Hablo inglés y también hablo francés.I speak English and I also speak French.
  • Yo también soy de Sevilla.I'm from Seville too.

Tampoco: not either, neither

Tampoco is the negative partner of también. It means not … either or neither. Like nunca (nada, nadie, nunca: the double negative), it can go before the verb with no no, or after the verb with no in front:

  • Tampoco tengo coche.I don't have a car either.
  • No tengo coche tampoco.I don't have a car either.
  • Mi hermana tampoco come carne. My sister doesn't eat meat either.

Short replies: agreeing

To agree with someone, match their sentence:

They sayYou agreeMeaning
Trabajo mucho.Yo también.So do I. / Me too.
No trabajo mucho.Yo tampoco.Neither do I. / Me neither.
  • Yo también.Me too.
  • Yo tampoco.Me neither.

Short replies: disagreeing

To disagree, use sí or no:

They sayYou disagreeMeaning
Trabajo mucho.Yo no.I don't.
No trabajo mucho.Yo sí.I do.

With gustar: a mí

With gustar the sentence starts with the person who likes (Gustar: me gusta / me gustan, me, te, le, nos, os, les with gustar and dar): (A mí) me gusta. So the reply uses a mí, a ti, a mi madre, not yo:

They sayAgreeDisagree
Me gusta el cine.A mí también.A mí no.
No me gusta el cine.A mí tampoco.A mí sí.
  • Me gusta el cine.I like cinema.
  • A mí también.Me too.
  • A mí tampoco.Me neither.
  • A mí sí.I do.

Note the accent: mí (me) carries an accent; mi without an accent means my. Sí (yes) carries an accent; si means if.

Common mistakes

  • También no → Tampoco. "Not either" is one word.
  • Yo también after a negative sentence → Yo tampoco. No tengo tiempo. Yo tampoco.
  • Yo también after Me gusta… → A mí también. The reply follows the gustar pattern. (You will hear yo también here in casual speech, but a mí también is the standard reply.)
  • No tampoco tengo → Tampoco tengo or No tengo tampoco.
  • A mi también → A mí también, with an accent on mí.
