The question words
A question word is a word that opens a question asking for information (who, what, where…). In Spanish every question word carries a written accent, and a written question is framed by ¿ … ?. You met qué, dónde and cómo in ¿Qué?, ¿Dónde?, ¿Cómo?; yes/no questions.
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| ¿qué? | what? |
| ¿cuál? ¿cuáles? | which? what? |
| ¿quién? ¿quiénes? | who? |
| ¿cuánto? ¿cuánta? ¿cuántos? ¿cuántas? | how much? how many? |
| ¿dónde? | where? |
| ¿adónde? (also a dónde) | where to? |
| ¿de dónde? | where from? |
| ¿cuándo? | when? |
| ¿cómo? | how? |
| ¿por qué? | why? |
Some words change form
Quién and cuál have plurals: quiénes, cuáles. Cuánto agrees with the noun that follows, like an adjective:
- ¿Quién es ese chico?Who is that boy?
- ¿Quiénes son tus amigos?Who are your friends?
- ¿Cuántos años tienes?How old are you?
- ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes? How many sisters do you have?
- ¿Cuánto cuesta el billete? How much is the ticket?
Where, where to, where from
- ¿Dónde vive tu hermano?Where does your brother live?
- ¿Adónde vais este verano?Where are you going this summer?
- ¿De dónde es tu profesora?Where is your teacher from?
Prepositions go first
English often puts the little word at the end ("Who do you live with?"). Spanish always puts it in front of the question word:
- ¿Con quién vives?Who do you live with?
- ¿A qué hora abre el museo? What time does the museum open?
- ¿De qué habláis?What are you (all) talking about?
Por qué and porque
¿Por qué? (two words, accent) asks why. Porque (one word, no accent) answers because (Linking words: y/e, o/u, pero, porque).
- ¿Por qué estudias español?Why are you studying Spanish?
- Porque quiero vivir en España.Because I want to live in Spain.
Word order
After the question word, the verb usually comes next, and the subject after it: ¿Dónde trabaja tu padre? The accent stays even inside a longer sentence: No sé dónde vive. (I don't know where he lives.)
¿Qué? or ¿Cuál? is a choice English speakers get wrong often. It has its own lesson: ¿Qué? or ¿Cuál?.
Common mistakes
¿Quién vives con?→ ¿Con quién vives? The preposition goes in front.¿Porque no vienes?→ ¿Por qué no vienes? In a question, why is two words with an accent.¿Cuánto hermanos tienes?→ ¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? Cuánto agrees with the noun.¿Quién son?→ ¿Quiénes son? for more than one person.¿Donde está?→ ¿Dónde está? Without the accent, donde is not a question word.
