Part of the free A1 Spanish course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

Two words for "what"

English what is sometimes qué and sometimes cuál. The rule depends on what comes after it.

Before ser: definition or identification?

  • ¿Qué es…? asks for a definition: what kind of thing is it?
  • ¿Cuál es…? asks you to pick out one particular thing: which one is it, out of all the possible ones?
  • ¿Qué es un ordenador?What is a computer?
  • ¿Cuál es tu dirección?What is your address?
  • ¿Cuál es la capital de Perú?What is the capital of Peru?

Names, numbers, addresses, favourite things and capitals all take cuál: there are many possible answers and you want the one that is true.

Before a noun: qué

When a noun comes straight after the question word, Spain uses qué:

  • ¿Qué color te gusta más?Which colour do you like best?
  • ¿Qué hora es?What time is it?

Before other verbs

  • qué for an open question, any answer possible;
  • cuál (or cuáles) when choosing from a group you can see or have just mentioned.
  • ¿Qué quieres para cenar? What do you want for dinner?
  • ¿Qué haces los sábados? What do you do on Saturdays?
  • Hay dos camisetas.There are two T-shirts.
  • ¿Cuál prefieres?Which one do you prefer?
  • ¿Cuáles son tus libros?Which are your books?
  • ¿Cuál de los dos es tu hermano?Which of the two is your brother?

Latin America

In parts of Latin America you will hear cuál + noun: ¿Cuál libro quieres? It is normal there, but in Spain qué libro is the usual form, and it is the safer choice in careful writing everywhere.
