21 to 29: one word
You know the numbers to 20 (Numbers 0–20 and phone numbers). From 21 to 29, Spanish writes one word: veinti- + the unit.
| 21 veintiuno | 22 veintidós | 23 veintitrés | 24 veinticuatro |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 veinticinco | 26 veintiséis | 27 veintisiete | 28 veintiocho |
| 29 veintinueve |
Three of them carry a written accent: veintidós, veintitrés, veintiséis.
The tens
| 30 treinta | 40 cuarenta | 50 cincuenta |
|---|---|---|
| 60 sesenta | 70 setenta | 80 ochenta |
| 90 noventa | 100 cien |
Careful with sesenta (60, from seis) and setenta (70, from siete).
31 to 99: three words with y
From 31 on, write ten + y + unit, as three words: treinta y uno, cuarenta y dos, noventa y nueve. The y (and) only ever appears here, between the tens and the units.
- Mi madre tiene cincuenta y tres años.My mother is fifty-three.
- Vivo en el número treinta y ocho.I live at number thirty-eight.
- Mi abuelo tiene ochenta y cuatro años.My grandfather is eighty-four.
- Necesito veintidós euros.I need twenty-two euros.
- Febrero tiene veintiocho días.February has twenty-eight days.
Uno changes before a noun
Numbers ending in uno behave like the article un/una:
- before a masculine noun: veintiún, treinta y un (note the accent on veintiún);
- before a feminine noun: veintiuna, treinta y una;
- counting, with no noun: veintiuno, treinta y uno.
- Tengo veintiún años.I'm twenty-one.
- En mi clase hay veintiuna personas.There are twenty-one people in my class.
- Enero tiene treinta y un días.January has thirty-one days.
Cien
Exactly 100 is cien: cien euros, cien personas. From 101 it becomes ciento: see Hundreds, thousands and prices.
- El libro tiene cien páginas.The book has a hundred pages.
Common mistakes
veinte y dos→ veintidós. From 21 to 29, write one word.treintaydos/treinta dos→ treinta y dos. From 31, three words with y.Tengo veintiuno años.→ Tengo veintiún años. Before a masculine noun, -uno becomes -ún.sesentafor 70 → setenta. Ses- is six, set- is seven.ciento euros→ cien euros. Exactly one hundred is cien.
