The days of the week

lunes (Monday)martes (Tuesday)miércoles (Wednesday)
jueves (Thursday)viernes (Friday)sábado (Saturday)
domingo (Sunday)

The Spanish week starts on Monday. Days are masculine and written with a small letter. Saturday and Sunday make the plural with -s (sábados, domingos); the others don't change (los lunes).

On Monday, on Mondays

Spanish uses no preposition for days. Instead:

  • el lunes = on Monday (one particular Monday);
  • los lunes = on Mondays (every Monday).
  • Hoy es martes.Today is Tuesday.
  • El sábado voy al cine.On Saturday I'm going to the cinema.
  • Los domingos como con mi familia. On Sundays I have lunch with my family.

El fin de semana is the weekend.

The months

enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre. Also written with a small letter. In a month is en:

  • En agosto hace mucho calor. It's very hot in August.
  • Las clases empiezan en septiembre.Classes start in September.

Saying the date

Spanish uses an ordinary number (not second, third): el + number + de + month, and de + year if needed: el doce de octubre de dos mil veintiséis (Hundreds, thousands and prices).

  • Hoy es el doce de octubre.Today is the twelfth of October.
  • Mi cumpleaños es el nueve de abril. My birthday is the ninth of April.
  • El examen es el lunes veinte de mayo. The exam is on Monday the twentieth of May.

For the first of the month you can say el uno or el primero. Both are used in Spain; el primero is more common in Latin America.

  • La boda es el primero de junio. The wedding is on the first of June.

Asking the date

  • ¿Qué día es hoy? → Hoy es jueves. / Hoy es el tres de mayo.
  • ¿Qué fecha es hoy? or ¿A qué estamos? → Estamos a tres de mayo.
  • Estamos a quince de marzo. It's the fifteenth of March.

Spain writes dates as day/month/year: 05/03/2026 is the 5th of March, not May 3rd.

Common mistakes

  • en lunes → el lunes. No preposition before days.
  • Lunes, Enero → lunes, enero. Small letters for days and months.
  • el tercero de mayo → el tres de mayo. Dates use ordinary numbers (only the first can be primero).
  • el doce octubre → el doce de octubre. Don't drop the de.
  • Reading 04/07 as April 7th: in Spain it is el cuatro de julio.
