How often?

Words of frequency say how often something happens. From most to least often:

de vez en cuandofrom time to time

  • Siempre desayuno en casa.I always have breakfast at home.
  • Normalmente ceno a las nueve.I usually have dinner at nine.
  • A menudo vamos al cine.We often go to the cinema.
  • A veces trabajo los sábados.Sometimes I work on Saturdays.
  • De vez en cuando como en un restaurante.From time to time I eat in a restaurant.

Where they go

Most of these words go at the start of the sentence or after the verb group. Nunca and casi nunca follow the negative rule from nada, nadie, nunca: the double negative: before the verb with no no, or after the verb with no in front.

  • Mi hermano nunca lee el periódico.My brother never reads the newspaper.
  • No veo la tele casi nunca.I hardly ever watch TV.

Every day, twice a week

  • todos los días / cada día = every day (also todas las semanas, todos los meses);
  • una vez = once, dos veces = twice (vez → veces), algunas veces = sometimes;
  • a la semana, al mes, al año = a week, a month, a year (a + el = al, de + el = del). You will also hear por: una vez por semana, especially in Latin America.
  • Todos los días tomo el autobús.I take the bus every day.
  • Juego al tenis dos veces a la semana.I play tennis twice a week.
  • Voy al médico una vez al año.I go to the doctor once a year.

Asking how often

  • ¿Con qué frecuencia haces deporte?How often do you do sport?

In conversation people also ask ¿Cada cuánto vas al gimnasio? Later you will learn soler (to usually do): acabar de, volver a, soler, empezar a + infinitive.

Common mistakes

  • todos días → todos los días. Keep the article.
  • dos vez → dos veces. Vez becomes veces in the plural.
  • Nunca no voy → Nunca voy or No voy nunca.
  • Confusing a menudo (often) with a veces (sometimes): a menudo is more frequent.
  • un vez → una vez. Vez is feminine.
