Tener, not “to be”
In English you are hungry, cold or right. In Spanish you have hunger, cold or reason: tengo hambre (literally “I have hunger”). These expressions use tener (Tener: having things, family and age (tengo veinte años), Tener, venir, decir: irregular in two ways):
| Person | tener |
|---|---|
| yo | tengo |
| tú | tienes |
| él, ella, usted | tiene |
| nosotros, nosotras | tenemos |
| vosotros, vosotras | tenéis |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | tienen |
The expressions
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| tener hambre | to be hungry |
| tener sed | to be thirsty |
| tener frío | to be cold |
| tener calor | to be hot |
| tener sueño | to be sleepy |
| tener prisa | to be in a hurry |
| tener miedo (de) | to be afraid (of) |
| tener razón | to be right |
| tener suerte | to be lucky |
| tener cuidado | to be careful |
| tener ganas de + infinitive | to feel like doing |
You already know one more from A0: tener veinte años, to be twenty.
- ¿Tienes sed?Are you thirsty?
- Mi hermano pequeño tiene miedo de los perros. My little brother is afraid of dogs.
- Tienes razón.You're right.
- Tenemos prisa porque el tren sale a las seis. We're in a hurry because the train leaves at six.
- Los niños tienen sueño.The children are sleepy.
- ¿Tenéis frío?Are you cold?
- Tengo ganas de ir a la playa.I feel like going to the beach.
“Very”: mucho or mucha, not muy
Hambre, sed, frío and the rest are nouns (naming words, like table or idea), so “very” is mucho or mucha, agreeing with the noun's gender. Muy only goes before adjectives (see Muy or mucho; poco, bastante, demasiado).
| masculine: mucho | feminine: mucha |
|---|---|
| mucho frío, mucho calor | mucha hambre, mucha sed |
| mucho sueño, mucho miedo | mucha prisa, mucha suerte |
- Tengo mucha hambre.I'm very hungry.
- Tienes toda la razón.You're absolutely right.
Hambre is feminine even though it is written el hambre (like el agua). So it's mucha hambre.
Who or what is cold? Three different sentences
- A person feels cold: tengo frío.
- The weather is cold: hace frío (The weather: hace calor, llueve, está nublado).
- An object is cold: la sopa está fría, estar + adjective (Ser or estar: the core contrast).
- Hace frío y tengo frío.It's cold and I'm cold.
- La sopa está fría.The soup is cold.
For “I'm hot”, say tengo calor. Estoy caliente can sound sexual, so avoid it about yourself.
