¿Qué tiempo hace?

¿Qué tiempo hace? means “What's the weather like?”. Here tiempo means weather (it also means time, but you ask the clock time with ¿Qué hora es?). Spanish describes the weather in four ways.

1. Hace + noun

Hace is the “it” form of hacer (to make, to do). With the weather it means “it is”:

SpanishEnglish
hace calorit's hot
hace fríoit's cold
hace solit's sunny
hace vientoit's windy
hace buen tiempothe weather is good
hace mal tiempothe weather is bad
  • ¿Qué tiempo hace hoy? What's the weather like today?
  • Hoy hace mucho calor. It's very hot today.
  • Hace sol pero hace viento. It's sunny but windy.
  • Hace buen tiempo para ir a la playa. It's good weather for going to the beach.

Because calor, frío, sol, viento are nouns, “very” is mucho: hace mucho frío, never hace muy frío.

2. Weather verbs: llover and nevar

Rain and snow are verbs. They only have an “it” form:

  • llover (to rain), o → ue: llueve (it rains, it's raining)
  • nevar (to snow), e → ie: nieva (it snows, it's snowing)

For “right now”, use estar + gerund (Estar + gerund: what is happening now): está lloviendo, está nevando.

  • En Londres llueve mucho. It rains a lot in London.
  • En invierno nieva en la sierra. In winter it snows in the mountains.
  • Está lloviendo y no tengo paraguas. It's raining and I don't have an umbrella.

3. Estar + adjective

For the state of the sky, use estar: está nublado (it's cloudy), está despejado (it's clear).

  • El cielo está nublado. The sky is cloudy.

4. Hay + noun

For things that are “there” in the weather, use hay (Hay: there is, there are): hay niebla (it's foggy), hay tormenta (there's a storm), hay nubes (there are clouds).

  • Hay niebla en la carretera. There's fog on the road.

Temperature

Hace treinta grados (it's thirty degrees). In Spain you'll also often hear estamos a + degrees. Bajo cero means below zero.

  • Estamos a dos grados bajo cero. It's minus two degrees.

Seasons

la primavera (spring), el verano (summer), el otoño (autumn), el invierno (winter): en verano hace calor.

Common mistakes

  • Es frío → Hace frío. The weather uses hace, not ser.
  • Hace muy calor → Hace mucho calor.
  • Hace nublado → Está nublado.
  • Lluve, neva → llueve, nieva. Both verbs change their stem.
  • ¿Qué tiempo es? → ¿Qué hora es? for the clock time; ¿Qué tiempo hace? for the weather.

Latin America

Hace calor, llueve, está nublado are understood everywhere. In much of Latin America people also ask ¿Cómo está el clima? about today's weather (in Spain el clima usually means the climate of a region), and you will also hear está haciendo frío.
