Part of the free A0 Spanish course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

Two question marks

Spanish writes ¿ at the start of a question and ? at the end (Word stress, written accents, ¿ and ¡). The opening mark tells the reader early that a question is coming.

Yes/no questions

A yes/no question is one you answer with sí or no. The easiest way to make one: take a normal sentence and raise your voice at the end. No helper word like English do is needed.

  • ¿Eres de Madrid?Are you from Madrid?
  • ¿Tienes tiempo ahora?Do you have time now?
  • ¿Es usted el profesor? Are you the teacher?

You can also put the verb before the subject. Both orders are correct and common:

  • ¿Está Luis en casa?Is Luis at home?

¿Luis está en casa? means the same.

Question words: qué, dónde, cómo

These question words always have a written accent, and they come first, followed by the verb:

wordmeaning
¿qué?what?
¿dónde?where?
¿cómo?how? / what … like?
  • ¿Qué es esto?What's this?
  • ¿Qué hay en la bolsa? What's in the bag?
  • ¿Dónde está la parada de autobús?Where is the bus stop?
  • ¿De dónde eres?Where are you from?

With a preposition like de, it goes in front of the question word: ¿De dónde eres?, never at the end as in English.

The three meanings of cómo

  • ¿Cómo te llamas?What's your name?
  • ¿Cómo estás?How are you?
  • ¿Cómo es tu ciudad? What's your city like?

¿Cómo está…? asks how someone is now; ¿Cómo es…? asks what someone or something is like (Estar: how you are and where things are, Ser: soy, eres, es…). On its own, ¿Cómo? means Sorry? / Pardon? when you didn't hear.

Without the accent, que and donde are joining words (that, where) inside a sentence, not question words. More question words (quién, cuál, cuánto, por qué) come in Every question word: qué, cuál, quién, cuánto, por qué….

Common mistakes

  • Eres de Madrid? → ¿Eres de Madrid? Don't forget the opening ¿.
  • ¿Donde está? → ¿Dónde está? Question words carry an accent.
  • ¿Dónde eres de? → ¿De dónde eres?
  • ¿Qué es tu nombre? → ¿Cómo te llamas? (or ¿Cuál es tu nombre?).
  • ¿Do tienes coche? → ¿Tienes coche? Spanish has no "do" in questions.
