Emphasis: es ahí donde, lo que más me molesta es

Cleft sentences to put one element in the spotlight, with the right relative word and agreement.

Part of the free C1 Spanish course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

English can stress a word with the voice (I didn't say that) or by restructuring the sentence (It was Ana who said it, What I need is a break). Spanish relies much more on restructuring. These structures are called cleft sentences (the sentence is "split" in two around ser), and they are everywhere in argument, journalism and conversation.

Ser + focus + relative word

Put ser first, then the element you want to highlight, then a relative word that matches it:

FocusRelative wordExample
a placedondeEs aquí donde...
a timecuandoFue en 2008 cuando...
a mannercomoEs así como...
a personquien, el que, la queFue Carmen quien...
a thing or idealo que, el que, la queEs esto lo que...
  • Es aquí donde firmamos el acuerdo hace diez años.It's here that we signed the agreement ten years ago.
  • Fue en 2008 cuando empezó la crisis. It was in 2008 that the crisis began.
  • Fue Carmen quien encontró el error. It was Carmen who found the mistake.
  • Fueron los vecinos los que llamaron a la policía.It was the neighbours who called the police.
  • Es así como se gana la confianza de un cliente. That's how you win a client's trust.

Two agreement points:

  • Ser agrees with the focus: fueron los vecinos, fui yo.
  • The tense of ser normally matches the other verb: Fue Carmen quien encontró, not Es Carmen quien encontró for a past event.

With yo or tú as the focus, the second verb may agree with the pronoun or be third person: Fui yo quien lo dijo and Fui yo quien lo dije are both accepted by the RAE; with quien, the third person is the more frequent choice.

Es por eso que and Fue allí que, with a plain que, are very common, especially in Latin America. Grammars describe them as widespread; the RAE's Diccionario panhispánico de dudas recommends the full relative in careful style: Por eso es por lo que, Fue allí donde.

Lo que + verb + ser: the pseudo-cleft

Start with what you are going to talk about (lo que me molesta, lo que necesito), then ser, then the key information.

  • Lo que más me molesta es que nadie me pregunte. What annoys me most is that nobody asks me.
  • Lo que hizo fue marcharse sin pagar. What he did was leave without paying.
  • Donde mejor se come es en casa de mi abuela. The best place to eat is my grandmother's house.

When the final element is plural, ser normally agrees with it:

  • Lo que necesito son unas buenas vacaciones. What I need is a good holiday.

Si … es porque, si de algo … es de

  • Si de algo estoy segura es de que no volveré a ese hotel. If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that I won't go back to that hotel.
  • Si te lo digo es porque me importas. If I'm telling you this, it's because I care about you.

Notice that the preposition is repeated: de algo … es de que.

Conversational emphasis

  • Lo que pasa es que... introduces an explanation or excuse and softens what follows.
  • Sí que stresses an affirmative: Ahora sí que...
  • In questions, es lo que adds insistence: ¿Qué es lo que quieres?
  • Lo que pasa es que no me han pagado todavía.The thing is, they haven't paid me yet.
  • Ahora sí que me has sorprendido. Now you've really surprised me.

See also neuter lo in Neuter lo: lo bueno, lo + adjective + que and relatives in el que, la que, lo que, quien. Word order for focus without ser comes at C2 in Word order, topic and focus: A Juan no lo he visto.

Common mistakes

  4. Lo que más me molesta es que nadie me _____ consultado antes.

haya — Molestar expresses a feeling, so the clause takes the subjunctive: haya consultado.
