Cuando + subjunctive for the future

When something hasn't happened yet: cuando llegue, en cuanto sepas, hasta que vuelvas, antes de que.

English says When I get home, I'll call you: a present tense with a future meaning. Spanish uses the present subjunctive in the when part, because the event has not happened yet; it is still pending.

  • Cuando llegue a casa, te llamo. When I get home, I'll call you.
  • Cuando tenga tiempo, leeré tu novela. When I have time, I'll read your novel.
  • Cuando seas mayor, lo entenderás.When you're older, you'll understand.

The other half of the sentence is about the future: a future tense, ir a, a present with future meaning, or a command.

Cuando + indicative: habits and the past

When cuando refers to something that usually happens or did happen, it's a fact, so the indicative is used:

Timecuando +Example
future (pending)subjunctiveCuando llegue, cenaremos.
habit (present)present indicativeCuando llego, siempre ceno.
pastpast indicativeCuando llegué, cenamos.
  • Cuando llego a casa, siempre me ducho. When I get home, I always have a shower.
  • Cuando era pequeño, vivía en Bilbao. When I was little, I lived in Bilbao.

The question word ¿cuándo? is different

In a question, ¿cuándo? takes the indicative, usually the future or the present: ¿Cuándo volverás? (When will you come back?), ¿Cuándo empiezas? The subjunctive is only for the linking word cuando (no accent) introducing a future event.

Other time words that work the same way

en cuanto, tan pronto como (as soon as), hasta que (until), mientras (while, as long as), después de que (after):

  • Llámame en cuanto sepas algo.Call me as soon as you know anything.
  • Esperaremos hasta que vuelvas. We'll wait until you come back.
  • Mientras estéis aquí, podéis usar mi coche. While you're here, you can use my car.

Antes de que (before) always takes the subjunctive, even about the past: the event hadn't happened yet.

  • Lávate las manos antes de que sirvamos la comida.Wash your hands before we serve the food.

Same subject: antes de, después de, hasta + infinitive

  • Después de comer, daremos un paseo. After eating, we'll go for a walk.

Antes de salir (before I leave) vs antes de que salgas (before you leave).

Latin America

The rule is the same everywhere: Cuando lleguen, cenamos (ustedes or ellos).

Common mistakes

  • Cuando llegaré, te llamo: no future after cuando. Use the subjunctive: Cuando llegue.
  • Cuando llego mañana, te llamo: the indicative after cuando is for habits and the past. A future event takes llegue.
  • Cuando sea pequeño, vivía en Bilbao: a past fact takes the indicative: Cuando era pequeño.
  • Antes de que salgo: antes de que always takes the subjunctive: antes de que salga.
  • ¿Cuándo vengas?: a question takes the indicative: ¿Cuándo vienes? or ¿Cuándo vendrás?
