Count to 100: the units come before the tens

Part of the free A0 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

0 to 12

0 null1 eins2 zwei3 drei
4 vier5 fünf6 sechs7 sieben
8 acht9 neun10 zehn11 elf
12 zwölf

13 to 19: number + zehn

dreizehn, vierzehn, fünfzehn, achtzehn, neunzehn. Two are shortened: sechzehn (16, no s) and siebzehn (17, no en).

The tens

20 zwanzig30 dreißig40 vierzig
50 fünfzig60 sechzig70 siebzig
80 achtzig90 neunzig100 hundert

Watch the three odd ones: dreißig ends in -ßig, not -zig; sechzig and siebzig are shortened like 16 and 17. You can say hundert or einhundert.

21 to 99: units first

German says the units first, then und, then the tens, all in one word, like the old English "four-and-twenty":

  • 21 = einundzwanzig (one-and-twenty)
  • 35 = fünfunddreißig
  • 99 = neunundneunzig

eins loses its s in front of und: einundzwanzig, einunddreißig. In front of a noun it is ein or eine: ein Kaffee, eine Stunde. For counting on its own it is eins.

  • Ich bin einundzwanzig Jahre alt.I'm twenty-one years old.
  • Das kostet fünfzehn Euro. That costs fifteen euros.
  • Meine Oma ist siebenundachtzig. My grandma is eighty-seven.
  • Wir haben dreißig Minuten Zeit.We have thirty minutes.
  • Der Bus Nummer zwölf kommt gleich. The number twelve bus is coming soon.
  • Die Klasse hat sechzehn Schüler. The class has sixteen pupils.
  • Das Buch hat hundert Seiten. The book has a hundred pages.

When someone says a number like achtundvierzig, write the second part first: you hear "eight… and forty", so write 4, then 8.

On the phone and in announcements, many people say zwo instead of zwei, so it can't be confused with drei.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the digits in the order you hear them: dreiundfünfzig is 53, not 35.
  • einsundzwanzig: it is einundzwanzig.
  • dreizig: 30 is dreißig.
  • sechszehn, siebenzehn: 16 is sechzehn, 17 is siebzehn.
  • Writing numbers as separate words: ein und zwanzig. It is one word: einundzwanzig.
