Two ways to tell the time

In Days, months and the time you met Es ist drei Uhr and halb vier. German has two systems:

  • the official 24-hour clock, used for trains, opening hours, the radio and TV: you say the hours, then Uhr, then the minutes;
  • the everyday 12-hour clock, used when talking with friends: Viertel nach, halb, Viertel vor.

7:15sieben Uhr fünfzehnViertel nach sieben
7:25sieben Uhr fünfundzwanzigfünf vor halb acht
7:30sieben Uhr dreißighalb acht
7:35sieben Uhr fünfunddreißigfünf nach halb acht
7:45sieben Uhr fünfundvierzigViertel vor acht
18:30achtzehn Uhr dreißighalb sieben (abends)

halb acht means half way to eight, so 7:30, not 8:30. Think of the next hour.

In writing, times often appear as 18.30 Uhr or 18:30 Uhr.

  • Der Zug fährt um achtzehn Uhr dreißig.The train leaves at six thirty in the evening.
  • Ich stehe um halb sieben auf.I get up at half past six.
  • Es ist fünf vor halb drei. It's twenty-five past two.

Asking the time

  • Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? What time is it (now)?
  • Um wie viel Uhr…? or Wann…? At what time does something happen?
  • Um wie viel Uhr beginnt der Film? What time does the film start?

Uhr or Stunde?

Uhr is a point on the clock (at eight o'clock); it also means a clock or watch. die Stunde (plural die Stunden) is an amount of time, an hour.

  • Ich arbeite acht Stunden am Tag.I work eight hours a day.

In parts of eastern and southern Germany and in Austria you may hear viertel acht (7:15) and dreiviertel acht (7:45). They are correct regional forms; Viertel nach sieben and Viertel vor acht are understood everywhere.

  • am acht Uhr → um acht Uhr. Clock times take um.
  • achtzehn dreißig Uhr → achtzehn Uhr dreißig. Uhr comes after the hours.
