Hundreds and thousands

Big numbers build on what you know from Numbers from 0 to 100. They are written as one long word, and the units still come before the tens.

NumberGerman
100hundert (or einhundert)
101hunderteins
120hundertzwanzig
345dreihundertfünfundvierzig
1000tausend (or eintausend)
2500zweitausendfünfhundert
1 000 000eine Million
4 000 000vier Millionen
  • Das Fahrrad kostet dreihundertfünfzig Euro. The bike costs three hundred and fifty euros.
  • Berlin hat fast vier Millionen Einwohner.Berlin has almost four million inhabitants.

German swaps the dot and the comma. 1.000 is a thousand and 3,50 is three and a half. So 2.500 € is two thousand five hundred euros, not two and a half.

Years

Years up to 1999 are said in hundreds: 1990 = neunzehnhundertneunzig. From 2000 they are said as a normal number: 2026 = zweitausendsechsundzwanzig.

Say the year on its own, or im Jahr + year. Never use in in front of a year.

  • Ich bin neunzehnhundertneunzig geboren.I was born in 1990.
  • Im Jahr zweitausendzwanzig sind wir nach Köln gezogen. We moved to Cologne in 2020.

Prices

Writtensaid
3,50 €drei Euro fünfzig
12,00 €zwölf Euro
0,99 €neunundneunzig Cent
1,20 €ein Euro zwanzig
  • Der Kaffee kostet zwei Euro achtzig. The coffee costs two euros eighty.

Ordinals: first, second, third

Ordinal numbers (first, second, third) are written with a dot: der 3. Mai. Up to 19 add -te; from 20 add -ste.

1.der erste7.der siebte
2.der zweite8.der achte
3.der dritte19.der neunzehnte
4.der vierte20.der zwanzigste
5.der fünfte21.der einundzwanzigste
6.der sechste31.der einunddreißigste

The irregular ones are bold: erste, dritte, siebte and achte (only one t).

Dates

The date is an ordinal with der (today is the third). “On” a date is am, and then the ordinal ends in -en.

  • Heute ist der dritte Oktober.Today is the third of October.
  • Am ersten Mai arbeiten wir nicht. We don't work on the first of May.
  • Wann hast du Geburtstag? When is your birthday?
  • Ich habe am zwanzigsten Juli Geburtstag. My birthday is on the twentieth of July.
  • Der Wievielte ist heute? What's the date today?

In writing, the day comes first: 12.03.2026 is the 12th of March, not the 3rd of December.

Common mistakes

  • in 2026 → 2026 or im Jahr 2026.
  • tausendneunhundertneunzig (for the year) → neunzehnhundertneunzig.
  • drei Komma fünfzig Euro → drei Euro fünfzig.
  • der dreite, der einste → der dritte, der erste.
  • am erste Mai → am ersten Mai. After am the ordinal ends in -en.
