Irregular adjectives – beau, nouveau, vieux, fou

Un bel homme, un vieil ami

Beau, nouveau, vieux (and fou, mou) go before the noun and have a special masculine form before a vowel or mute h.

  • un beau garçon → un bel homme → une belle femme
  • un nouveau livre → un nouvel ordinateur → une nouvelle voiture
  • un vieux chien → un vieil ami → une vieille dame

The special forms bel, nouvel, vieil sound like the feminine: bel = belle, nouvel = nouvelle, vieil = vieille.

Only directly before the noun

After être, use the normal masculine form: L'appartement est beau. (not bel)

Plurals

The masculine plural uses the normal form + x: de beaux‿appartements, de nouveaux‿amis, de vieux‿amis (with a z liaison).
