Superlatives – le plus, le moins
La plus belle ville
The superlative says something is the most or the least.
Le / la / les + plus / moins + adjective
- C'est le plus grand musée du monde.It's the biggest museum in the world.
- C'est la ville la plus belle de France.It's the most beautiful town in France.
- Ce sont les moins chers.They're the cheapest (least expensive).
The article and adjective agree with the noun.
Position
The adjective keeps its usual position:
- Adjectives that go before the noun: la plus belle ville, le plus petit chien.
- Adjectives that go after the noun: the article is repeated: la ville la plus moderne, l'élève le plus intelligent.
- C'est le film le plus intéressant de l'année.It's the most interesting film of the year.
"In" = de
After a superlative, in is de:
- le plus haut bâtiment du mondethe tallest building in the world
- la meilleure élève de la classethe best student in the class
Irregular
- bon → le meilleur, mauvais → le pire, bien → le mieux
With verbs
Use le plus / le moins (invariable) after the verb:
- C'est elle qui court le plus vite.She's the one who runs fastest.
- C'est ce que j'aime le plus.It's what I like most.
With nouns
- C'est lui qui a le plus d'amis.He's the one with the most friends.
