Simple future – irregular stems

Je serai, j'aurai, j'irai, je ferai

About twenty common verbs have an irregular future stem, but they all take the regular endings (-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont). Every stem ends in r.

The irregular stems

être → ser-avoir → aur-aller → ir-
faire → fer-savoir → saur-pouvoir → pourr-
vouloir → voudr-devoir → devr-voir → verr-
venir → viendr-tenir → tiendr-envoyer → enverr-
courir → courr-mourir → mourr-recevoir → recevr-
falloir → il faudrapleuvoir → il pleuvravaloir → vaudr-
  • Je serai là à midi.I'll be there at noon.
  • Tu auras le temps ?Will you have time?
  • On ira à la plage. We'll go to the beach.
  • Il fera beau demain. The weather will be nice tomorrow.
  • Vous verrez !You'll see!
  • Ils viendront avec nous. They'll come with us.
  • Il faudra se dépêcher. We'll have to hurry.

Pronunciation

In pourr-, verr-, courr-, mourr-, enverr-, the double r is held slightly longer. That's how il courait (was running) differs from il courra (will run).

Derived verbs share the stem

  • revenir → je reviendrai, devenir → je deviendrai, refaire → je referai, prévoir → je prévoirai (exception!)

These same stems are used for the conditional: Present conditional.
