Plus-que-parfait – the past before the past

The plus-que-parfait (pluperfect) is the past before the past: English had done.

How to form it

avoir or être in the imparfait + past participle

The same verbs use être as in the passé composé, with the same agreement rules.

Uses

An action completed before another past action: > Quand je suis arrivé, le film avait déjà commencé. = When I arrived, the film had already started. > Il m'a dit qu'il avait perdu ses clés. = He told me he had lost his keys. > Elle était déjà partie. = She had already left.

Regrets with si: > Si j'avais su ! = If only I had known! > Si tu m'avais écouté… = If you had listened to me…

In si clauses (see Si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé): > Si j'avais su, je serais venu. = If I had known, I would have come.

In reported speech, the passé composé becomes plus-que-parfait (see Reported speech): > « J'ai fini. » → Il a dit qu'il avait fini.
